Default 600 mile maint? doesn't sound like much...

It's time for my 600 mile maint (135 miles ago) I called the dealer and they want $177 for it. I asked them what they did and it's oil, chain tension, cable adjust/lube, tire pressure and brakesand a handfull of other minor things.

I also asked that if I did the maint myself if it would change/void/modfiy/nullify any warranty and the guy said "No"

The only thing the manual said, that I'm a little foggy on, is checking the steering bearings. Is it just like a car? check for movement etc? or is there a torque setting that I have to check?

All the rest of that maintenance is pretty easy stuff that anyone can do themselves. Someone told me that I should have it done at the dealer and have them check the chassis for loose bolts and whatnot. But thats not covered in the 600 mile maint and I think I can take care of that myself. right?

Has anyone had any issues with a new bike that I should possible consider for the first maintenance?

My first maint. was $89 including oil & filter(Castrol evo) at my dealer.
$177 is a bit much.

I took mine in just to make sure everything was straight. I did the oil change myself though, which knocked a whopping $80 off the cost.

It's all easy. Either obtain a copy of the service manual, or access an on-line pdf of the manual, it will explain the simple procedure for checking and, if needed, adjusting the steering head bearings. It involves suspending the front end and checking for tolerance in front to back play of the forks.

the stock manual is just fine. Its ridiculously easy to change the oil on the bike. Everything is easy to get to and pretty straight forward. Just change it your self. I bought 3 liters of oil for 12$ and a filter for another 12 at the dealer and it took about 20 minutes max. A LOT easier than on a car.

But the "stock manual" (owner's manual) does not describe the head bearing torque sequence, Steering head play inspection, and many other aspects of inspection, maintenance, and repair that is detailed in the Service Manual. For this type of information, the stock manual is not fine. There is no downside to having, or having access to, the Service Manual. Anyone interested in the function, maintenance, and repair procedures for the motorcycle should have one.

you are right eyespy in that the manual does not tell you how to repair anything, merely how to find and acces components of the bike.

My dealer told me there was no reason to bring it in for a 600 mile service. This is a very low maintenance motorcycle.

If the bike has a factory specified 600 mile initial service interval, you had better perform the service and document it to avoid possible warranty disputes down the the line despite what the dealer said.

The bike does not have a factory specified 600 mile service. I have also had my TPS replaced under warranty and at a different dealer than where I bought the bike. The dealer where I bought it said "there is no reason to bring it back for a 600 mile service, just be sure to change the oil and filter at 600 miles."

I'm just going to change the oil myself today. I feel that, that is the most important due to particle circulation from a new engine.

It seems like there is some dispute over this issue so I will call Yamaha directly on monday and get the final word to share with you all.

I don't trust dealers very much. When I bought my bike I asked how to break it in and they said "keep it off the redline" That doesn't sound accurate to me.

I'll let you all know what I find out on monday.

I don't know if it does or does not. Many bikes do. Mine all did. Simply look in the owners manual to see if there is a 600 mile initial maintenance interval. If there is, make sure you document its performance.

You would take in your Chrysler 300 or Beemer or Lexus car for initial service wouldn't you?
Its only protecting your investment and documenting it for the record.
And showing documented mainetance on resale.
Read your manual for maintenance intervals.
Of course the dealer would love to see you in more often because you cheapskated yourself on maintenance(or abuse).
The bike IS as close to maintenance free as it gets.
Its your choice.
