Default Question for Laser Extreme exhaust owners

I ordered the Laser Extreme "Specials" which are the twin cannister Lasers giving a look similar to the stock exhaust setup. Got them from Foster RAD in NY which is a great place to deal with and Robert Foster (owner) gives a nice discount for our forum members. Two thumbs up for Foster RAD!!

They will be delivered on Tuesday so I already have pulled off the stock exhaust. Now for the question:

The exhaust comes with "Sports" and "Legal" inserts, so which are you other Laser owners using???????? It looks like most of you have the quad pipe Lasers, but your input will still give me some idea which insert to install.

Since the inserts install at the inlet side of the exhaust cannister, I refer not to have to have to tear apart the installation if I go with the wrong one. Save me some hassle here guys and give me your 2 cents!!

I got the xtreme and I put in the race inserts...its not that bad....I had the street inserts at first and wanted a little more noise...there should be a couple of posts on here that have sound clips of the xtreme's. One taken up to around 14k rpms on the bike, and the one I did that was done by my friend watching me go down the street, taking it up to about 7-8k in first

I have the race inserts in myself. I thought they were quite loud at first, but after being aware that the cagers were noticing me more, I kept them in. Plus, the bike sounds really good at 10k+ rpm

Perhaps a sound clip could be made available?

Thanks for your posts on your Laser Extremes. I'm a little suprised that everyone seems to be using the sport inserts.

I guess my concern is that the extra db's from the "sport" inserts would get a bit old after while. I'll check the forum for the sound clips that were mentioned.

Anyway, I'm get real anxious to get the Lasers on and light it up for the first time.

I had the extremes with the road inserts at first, for about 2 weeks, then went to the sport version and never looked back.

They are not that loud, just gives the bike a real sexy "Supersport" sound when it comes on the pipe.

THat is the only way to go for me, I took them off and hope they will fit on mt 2005 when it hits the showroom in about 3 weeks.

Definitely go with the sport inserts. Otherwise, you'll be disassemblying the pipes again to take the old ones out. It'll save you time.

Pics would be good when you have them fitted, also with them fitted would you describe the sound as a low down burble or more of a revvy scream?

I sooooo wish they would make them in Titainium... or even aluminium. SS is heavy. and has more up-keep. However, they are nice looking. Lol. So many choices....

Default update

I received the exhaust yesterday... it was all very securely packaged by Laser (JAMA). The pipe section from the cat converter to the cannisters is actually made up of 3 separate pipe sections that fit together with very close tolerance slip joints. I called Foster RAD to confirm that after final fitting of the installation you can use hi-temp Permatex to lock the joints together, but it really isn't necessary. The pipe sections are stainless and all the welds are meticulously done. The twin cannisters are also extremely well made.. a bit suprising in that they are oval shaped at the inlet and then transition to round at the back of the cannister. I will get some digi pix posted after the installation so you guys can finally get to see my bike with all the aftermarket goodies.

Update from Foster RAD last night..... Laser is producing a cat eliminator pipe section and also a full header (system) for our beloved FZ6's. Don't know when the will hit the USA, but they are in the works.

Angry

Hey, I like those little round people shaking signs. I spend all my extra money on my bike and not on digital cameras. So....... I will have to borrow the camera from work when in the installation is complete. Sorry, I know, I like to see pix too!

Default update 2 - project complete (long)

Ok, the exhaust project is finally complete and I am exhausted. No pun intended. I must have spent about 20 hours (total) on the installation. The installation instructions consist of nothing but a handful of b&w pictures with no text. The pictures helped in some cases, but totally left you in the dark on others. The majority of the problems (and time spent) were due to getting the 3-piece connecting pipe and canisters to align underneath the bike. After numerous hours I found the solution to be... loosening the lower cat clamp and turning the frame-to-cat pipe mount 180 deg. which then allowed the pipe system to properly center. Past that, I made several other changes to the mounts, hangers and hardware to get the system to fit better. I am very pleased with the end result, since everything is solidly mounted and well aligned.... I just never imagined that the install would be such a PIA.

As for the sound: definately very deep and resonant up to about 4K. So much so that I acutually ended up using the "legal" inserts which Laser now calls "db killers". And yes, I did try the "sport' inserts but this system seems plently loud even with the "legal" inserts. Once you get past the lower rpm "growl", it sounds very sweet winding up into the higher rpm. At cruise, the sound level is just about right .. not too annoying.

Seat-of-the pants dyno: a marked improvement in the mid-range throttle response which I was glad to see. Basically the engine seems quicker and smoother throughout the rpm range. I sure the engine is breathing better since the canisters are straight through.

Happy with $ spent? Yes, since the bike runs better and sounds more like a kick ass sport bike.

If all goes well, I will borrow a camera and time to get pix posted by next weekend. For anyone wanting to actually follow in my footsteps and install one on these systems, I would be willing to write up specific instructions and tips to make YOUR installation easier. God, I hate being the guinea pig :-).

I went with the street inserts. Foster said there was no perforemance difference between the two. I have neighbors. Love the sound as is. Guess I'm getting old.
