Hey Folks,
I've gotten my bike "finished" to the point where I thought I'd show people what I have done.
I decided on a V-Rod headlight early on because I liked its raked back classy style and am not a big fan of the euro streetfighter style headlights. The V-rod headlight was $120, and was painted black with fusion paint. However, the mounting brackets that I found on the internets were not my style/budget etc. So, I machined some clamps out of 3/4 Aluminum plate which clamp to the forks at my friend's pop's garage (bought him a gift certificate for a fancy eatery in exchange for letting me use his mill).
The "ears" which attach the headlight to the clamps are cut from 1/8" aluminum and filed/sanded to shape. I also cut a mounting plate for the speedo cluster from the same stuff which bridges across the handlebar mounts (it uses the back two bolts) and the rubber grommets fit into the plate, maintaining the cluster's vibe isolated mounting.
For mirrors I ordered $50 ebay units, and machined down the bar end weights on my small lathe so that they clamp directly to those. The front turn signals are $20 units that are fairly similar to the stock units, just smaller.
I also made my own fender eliminator which the stock rear turn signals mount to (i cut out holes of the same shame that they originally mounted to). This was made out of 1/8" aluminum L channel and I am really proud of it (unfortunately it is covered by the license plate, and is not really visible).
Also I did the R6 forks and brakes, airbox mod, and tech spec tank grips cut from their universal sheet (enough for 2 sets, I sold the second).
In any event, I am thrilled with the result, and it was very cheap (especially if I sell the stock fairing which would make it basically free).
Sorry about that. If this is not front on enough for everybody I'll have to pull the bike out tomorrow and snap another couple of pictures. The one was a progress shot that I sent to my buddy and is before the R6 components went on, and I forgot to put the one side panel on.. but you get the idea.
This whole process has really put my Bike Owners Numerical Excitement Rating (B.O.N.E.R) for the FZ off the charts. Its really amazing how small changes can change the feel and look of the bike. I was visiting a Bimota, Aprilia, Benelli, Ducati dealership in Virginia one time, it became clear to me that the details really make a big difference. The owner kept talking about the passion associated with the Italian exotics, and it kind of inspired me correct the small details that bother me about the FZ (I'm going to mod the pegs and rearsets sometime, really thats the last detail that is bothering me. R1 shock is a maybe).
Thanks for the positive comments.. I am really proud of it .
nice bike, i went naked with a dual 4" headlight setup, my friends said my bike was wicked when they saw me on the freeway... then winter came along and i got sick of having a dirty white leather jacket along with 0 wind protection so i put my fairing back on... and now my right side is missing the plastic washer and some bolts rattle loose every now and then... other then that your r6 front shock mod is very complimentary to teh blackout frame... u should put some black electrical tape over the white VIN sticker though... just my 2 cents
Sheesh guys.. thanks. I am going to get some black vinyl sticker sheet and cover up the white vin sticker as well as peel off the swingarm stickers. I was afraid of electrical tape shrinking and peeling and getting all sticky and gross.
