Well, re-doing another one for fun would be cool I enjoy working on the bike, and it could even end up better, since I would have plenty of cash to spend on it (after buying a used 06)

We did discover one fact: the information that is displayed within the LCD section (RPM, MPH, temps, etc.) is encoded and transmitted down a SINGLE wire from the ECU to the meter. There is a steady 4.0V DC voltage across this Yellow/Blue wire to ground, so it has to be a PCM stream that contains all of the data.
Vehicle manufactures tend to use CAN to interface instruments and other devices together in/on their vehicles. It's amazing how much stuff is networked together in modern vehicles.
That makes sense. I haven't researched how CAN works so I will follow these links to learn something new, thanks Jim!
What type of device did you use to watch the data flow?
I have two different pieces of interface hardware.
- One interfaces the GM ALDL signals to the parallel port for an older DOS monitoring program.
- The other interfaces the GM ALDL signals to an RS232 serial serial port.
For the serial port interface, I have several different windows based programs for monitoring / logging, and I also have software that lets me modify and re-flash the PCM via the same cable. (And yes I've bricked my PCM before when a flash failed, so my PCM is now socketed and I carry a spare set of flash chips...)
ok I finally finished the front end. Here are some close up pics... you can see the speedo brackets, custom aluminum headlight fork bracket (yes, they look funky), and some of the wiring...
oh and for the couple of ppl interested in seeing the shift light in action, I`ll do that in the next couple of wkds... during my next ride.
