Talking Exhaust mod newbie

Hi all

I realise this may be a stupid question to most of you, but im a bit of a newbie when it comes to the insides of a motorbike!

I have been looking to replace the stock exhaust with some slip-ons for quite a while, and i need to know - HOW do i do it?!?!?!?

i have had a poke around the exhaust system on my 2006 FZ6 and cant figure out how the cans would "slip on"!

Also, if any one could tell me the difference between carbon fiber, titanium, aluminium, steel etc. cans (other than the material!) then that would be a great help!

Thanx all!

This is the point of a forum, is it not? Ask questions man!

It isn't terribly difficult to put on a slip-on for our bikes, especially if the exhaust comes with a good manual. I bought a Scorpion CF slip-on and it fit/sounds fantastic.

To install you have to remove the seat, the rear assembly that the grab arms are attached to (which is held on the bike by 6 bolts), unplug the connector for the rear lights which are behind I believe the left (facing front) rear painted panel. There are a few other bolts underneath that assembly that must be removed, and after that it gets pretty easy.

The most difficult part for me was getting everything lined up. The Scorpion exhaust is known around here for leaking at the joints, so if that's what you were interested in it would be a good idea to go to a local auto parts store and pick something up to seal that system up.

As far as I know there is no performance difference between the types. I suppose there could be a weight difference between different manufactures, but I'm sure it's minimal. Anything is lighter than the stocker.

By the way, just to give a little more detail:

You can see where the one small screw is on the bottom, there are two more on top underneath the rear part of the seat, and the last two are on the sides of the bike. If you look at the piece itself you can find 'em pretty easily.

If you could deal with something a little messy you could get a specific high heat RTV that you would coat the pipes with, put together and clamp down.

I have heard of someone mention exhaust tape or something like that before? I know less of that than the RTV.

My biggest problem are the leaks from the slits in the pipe. The clamp isn't long enough (for the cat/y pipe) to cover the slits and air gets out. I'm just going to use RTV and be done with it.

I've needed to do this for a couple of months now but I keep putting it off because it isn't that bad, but I know it's there so it still bothers me.

PhishX, you're welcome

That's the right idea, exactly.

Head over to your local parts store and pick some up. I think you can find a loctite high temp RTV that can take 600 degrees which should be more than enough.

EDIT: I'm also reading good stuff around the internet about Permatex Ultra Copper High Temp RTV.

Wink

Hay hay

ok, no laughing at this, but in the UK, we are limited to 33bhp untill we are 21. No idea what the laws are like in the US but its bloody annoying!

so for about another 2 years i am stuck with a 33bhp, 90mph FZ6. Still does all i want it do to and i love it, but my question is, would you advise AGAINST doing any mods on the exhaust untill my limiter is taken off and i have full use of the engine?

Cheers

I would'nt worry about it. Two years will go by fast, enjoy that bike. I would leave the exhaust alone till then. Go buy that favorite piece of gear that you have been wanting for a while.

Lol, well it wouldnt have been for a while yet anyway, BIG hole in my wallet thanks to this bike!

Just curious as to how it all works. I took the back of the bike apart last weekend as the instructions above said. And you were right FireHazard - it was really easy. and it all makes sense now!

I freaked out though when the wind blew my pot of screws over and scattered bolts n screws all over! hehe

I'm glad it worked out for you

That's crazy about the limiting of the bikes! I would be mad if I bought a bike and wasn't allowed to use what I paid for... in fact I probably wouldn't have bought it. Hell, what am I saying, of course I would have, the FZ6 rocks.

I got a Scorpion with the same issue of exhaust leak from the Y pipe. I was able to seal it up by folding some aluminum foil into a strip that is about 2" wide and wrapping the stock pipe and mounting the Y pipe over the foil and tighten up the clamp. Worked like a charm and will not ever melt, or come off.

Yeah the limiting laws in the UK SUCK! They think that all Motorbike drivers under 21 are going to be Reckless drivers! Im not reckless *Cough*!

I guess this way though i get 2 bikes, a 33bhp one now, and then the full horse in about 2 years time!

I would not feel so bad about the limits that are imposed upon you. Even though you yourself may be a more mature person the laws there probably keep the insurance and accident rate down. I wish they would do that here, it surely would not hurt. You will be over 21 before you know it. At least you can ride at your age, enjoy and make the most of these next couple of years to further hone your skills and then you will be ready to jump up when the time comes. Happy riding.
