for anyone who plans on doing this; the bar clamps do not work for everyday riding (if you are going to use the bottom mounting points on the speedo directly into the clamps).
i had to fabricate a mounting plate which matched up with all four points to be sure that it was stable enough, and then mount that to the bar clamps.

fyi.
Cool thanks, can you take pics + post details of the plate?
FYI: I have had my speedo mounted using only the 2 bottom holes (+ 2 screws and 4 rubber grommets) directly to the clamps for a few months now (and commute 40 miles everyday and did long rides) with zero problems. Not sure what you mean by "do not work for everyday riding", but if you have a better way, please post up details!
well... when installed the speedo seemed really flimsy using only the two bottom mounting points, but i did it anyway.
while riding on the freeway one of the screws came loose and even dropped out. i ended up holding my speedometer up until i came to an exit where i could take a look. could have been because of the vibration (since i didn't install any rubber grommets). regardless, i figured it best to use all four mounting points.
i ended up getting some diamond plate, mapping out all the mounting points, drilling and bending the plate to fit, and painting it flat black.
i'm really happy with the outcome, and how sturdy it is.
... other than that i'd like to send a big THANKS to you, wavex, for the inspiration and all the helpful links.
i'll try to take a few pictures soon and post'em up

I see the grommets do help a lot as I was getting annoying vibration noises from the speedo otherwise. I also used thread locking compound which certainly helped!
Anyway, your plate bracket is probably sturdier and I would definitely be interested to see how it looks mounted on the HB... Thanks.
You're welcome, and please post pics of your naked beast! Anyone is very welcome to post pics of their naked baby in here.
here's one of the plate from the front of the bike (kneeling)
bike is filthy; it's been slightly raining the last couple days... i used some bolt-ends from a harley on the underside and painted'em black, i still have to work out the washer situation since the barmount brackets have a strange spherical/flat topside.
