SAN DIEGO – Two people on a motorcycle died in a fiery head-on collision with a Cadillac Escalade on state Route 78 in the San Pasqual area Sunday, San Diego police said.
The collision, just east of the San Diego Wild Animal Park at Mile Marker 30, was reported at 9:48 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.
No other injuries were reported, said police Sgt. Rodney Vandiver.
The victims were on a 2006 Yamaha riding east, about 4 miles east of Bandy Canyon, when the bike crossed into oncoming traffic and hit the big sport utility vehicle head-on, Vandiver said.
A third vehicle caught fire after hitting some debris from the accident, Vandiver said.
Police said Route 78 would be closed at Bandy Canyon Road for at least four hours to accommodate the investigation. Motorists were urged to avoid the area, or use Scripps Poway Parkway or Poway Road to state Route 67.

"Mr. Madison what you just said was one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point...in your rambling incoherent response...were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points...and may God have mercy on your soul."
SAN PASQUAL VALLEY -- Two people on a motorcycle who were killed in a weekend crash on Highway 78 in San Pasqual Valley were San Diego residents, authorities said Monday.
A San Diego County medical examiner's investigator said the driver was Rogerio Christopher Cronin, 26, who lived with his passenger, Marcia Luckman, 29, in the Clairemont area.
The couple was on a 2006 Yamaha traveling eastbound about 9:45 a.m. on the highway, also known as San Pasqual Valley Road in the rural area east of Escondido, officials said.
"The motorcycle (driver) decided to drive onto the wrong side of the road to pass slower moving traffic," said San Diego police Sgt. Jeff Fellows.
Fellows said the motorcycle crashed into an oncoming Cadillac Escalade, driven by Harold Mosser, 59, of Ramona.
The burning gas tank from the motorcycle slid under a 1997 Nissan, setting it ablaze, the sergeant said. He said that driver, Samuel Wagstaff, 41, of El Cajon, and his passenger escaped unhurt.
Dont pass in corners folks...
What a shame.
