Default Duc vs.Triumph?

I’m seriously looking into getting another bike. I’ve gotten to the point where I want my daily rider to be a bit more “standard” than the classic sportbike (yet, I still will be hitting the curves), and want to have something a little different than the rest.

I was big into getting a Speed Triple (that the new Triple came out at the time I was trying to make this decision didn’t help at all), but have been looking at Monsters (and Buells, as well). I’m a little thrown. I’m not interested in a sport-tourer

My "have to haves" include:

· My wife being comfortable as a passenger
· Maintenance not having to tear the bike in half every month to keep it running well
· Parts availability (Bikes break, but how long does it take to wait for the part to arrive to fix it?)

I have no qualms about getting my hands dirty on a regular basis to keep it running well, but want to be able to ride out to the middle of nowhere without fear of spending two months in the Bates Motel waiting for a stator to arrive. Mods will be kept to a minimum.

Thanks.

I think the passenger pegs on the new Speed Triple might cause your wife some problems if I remember correctly. Other than that slight fault, the Triple is the best bike available right now in my opinion. It's the only bike I would seriously consider giving up my Busa for.

You don't want the Triple, then. I bought one last Saturday. It's awesome, but the rear seat is nothing but a stub, and the passenger pegs will have her knees up under her chin.

Which might not be a bad thing?

Neither is really a passenger friendly bike, but the Monster has a little more room, I think. None of my passengers have ever complained about the accomodations. The maintenance on the air-coolers ain't bad and there are numerous online sources for parts. But, the power output on the air-coolers isn't overwhelming. You'd have to move up to a used S4 or a new S4R to match the Speed III. Don't have the info, but I suspect that the suspension on those two beasts is a step up on the Triple.

You might also consider the Aprilia Tuono.

Sorry – I should have clarified the passenger comfort deal; we won’t be doing any sport-touring-type rides, maybe 250 miles a day once in a great while (otherwise, she’ll be on the back maybe twice a week for some [taking it easy] mountain rides). The thing she hates about the ZX6R is the forward leaning position, but the pillion seat of the Triple is really small… She loved the 919 at the dealer the other day.

Thanks again for your input.

too bad you're not out this way, There's a used 919 at my dealer's with essentially no miles on it that would go for cheap... I guess you could fly out & ride home

What about an FZ1? Or a V-strom I have a V-strom (hey stop laughing ass hole!!!) and My wife hates motorcycles. She actually will go for a ride with me once in a while because it is comfy. But it is not the bike for everyone

Triumph Sprint is purdy sweet. I know you don't want "sport tourer" and yes it is not more standard...but it has the 1050cc Trip same as the Speed. Talked to a dealer and said it felt like a different bike. Not so HOOLIGAN as the triple, but very strong.

I don't think that maintenance is going to be a problem with any newer bike. Parts may take a day or two to get here from across the pond, but stuff doesn't break down like it used to. We aren't talking BSA's

I'm a big boy..and I've had to ride on the back of the triple before..and it wasn't that bad compared to a lot of bikes I've been on. Although, I've never rode the new triple they put out..but, that thing is small! I'm big on the T509 Speed Triple. You can pick one up real cheap, and they are slick. No problems with it at all. My neighbor has a 748s and a 900 Monster..and it seems like he is always working on those things! I personally would love to own them..but, they are pricey and seem to have a temper.

Just to keep you up to date (as I know you’ve been waiting on pins & needles ) - I’ve yet to make a decision.

However, I’m at least one step closer as a Duc has pretty much been ruled out. The Triple is still in the lead, however Buell jumps out in front from time to time (love twins).

I’m sappy, but I’m gonna miss my ZX6R. We've been through a lot.

I wouldnt buy anything buell untill they learn how to make a bike that works. I would look for a 955i speed triple as you can get one for a great price and maby even new.
