What the? Does anyone do this, and how would that make the fluids not get dark?

Uh, ok. Dark fluid hasn't been shown to detrimentally effect clutch performance to my knowledge. To be sure, empirical evidence has proven riding with black, in fact, clutch fluid doesn't make a bit of notable difference.
The darkening has a couple putative causes - 'cooking' and dirt getting in around slave cyl seals. Whichever the cause, it doesn't seem to have any negative effect.
As for paper towels into the reservoir, I wouldn't put anything but a clean siphon/tube into my fluid resrvrs, esp a paper towel that's likely to leave fibers behind to contaminate the fluid. Don't listen to this jahoo whos assertion you've quoted
One of my two Ducs and my suzuki get discolored clutch fluid shortly after changing. I haven't found a way to prevent it. And across all the boards I frequent the consensus is that if it bothers you, change it. Otherwise, ride happy.
