Default does strapping and lowering really help times?

i have a 2005 sv650s that i've been taking out to the track quite often lately just to play around. i've been running 12.4s at 106 with a 1.9 60 foot. the bike hasnt really wanted to lift up, it mostly just sits and spins if i try to launch hard off the line. some guys out there were saying if i strapped the front end my times would drop quite a bit. i mean, obviously its not going to be as fast as a 600ss, i dont really care about that but i would like to see how fast i can possibly get this bike without actually spending any money on it. i see plenty of dudes out here running high 11s on their gsxr1k's and busas because they have no clue what they're doing.

It would help..... I was running 9.90's on a stock wheel base/stock height. Then I lowered the forks internally (you could use a strap) and lowered the back with a stock wheel base and my best pass with that set up was 9.73. I've seen guys run better than that with my same set up.

On my bike the best time with a completely stock setup was 11.48. When I added just a strap and lowered it ($70 for the strap and dogbones) I was able to run a 10.94. My 60 foot time went from high 1.90's to low 1.70's.

If your spinning now it will be worse if you just strap the front end without lowering the rear. It will transfer even more weight to the front and unload the rear tire. I would work on getting traction first and go from there. Get the tire hot, stay in the sticky groove of the track, and let air out of the tire if needed. Also it kind of sounds like your just dropping the clutch on the bike, you need to snap/slide the clutch as you take off. Working the clutch and throttle to keep traction and not wheelie.

Was that on your ZX6 or R6? Those are damn good times. My best time so far has been 11.45 and constantly net 1.9s on my 60ft. Granted I've only been to the track twice, I feel I've done all I can. Any other suggestions to improve my times?

HARDER LAUNCHES!

Seriously, you was able to get 1.9x 60 ft's on your first time at the track. You can definately do better. I've watched your launches, and can see room for improvement.

More rpm's at launch, let out on the clutch a little quicker. Doing this will likely make you wheelie some, but if the front wheel just floats about 1 foot in the air through first gear, it's fine.

Then again, I suck at this. Might want to ignore my advice all together. ;)

Shut up...I despise you for getting me hooked on this.
You know I can't afford to get a dedicated track bike AND a dedicated drag bike...ugh.

That was on the ZX-6R. My times were just like yours when stock. Once I added the strap and lowering links I could just launch so much harder. Part of it was just added confidence of not having the bike come up.

But I launched the bike at a very high RPM and just got the clutch right. From what I can tell drag racing a bike is mostly about getting the clutch right. Too much to soon and you wheelie, too little and you just burn time and the clutch.

I have a hard time imagining how those guys in the magazines run those times they do but I suspect they use correction factors.

The R6 is my track bike and I haven't run that at the strip. It's geared too so that would make it even harder on the strip.

A dragbike would be nice to have.

Ahahahahah!!!

SURE you can! Drag bike: Old KZ1000. I still see 'em at the track racing, and running FAST. However, you may have to drop some money into the motor, a nitrous kit, arm, etc.

Then, make a track bike out of your R6.

Then, get another street bike.

All for under $10k.

Hah!

Do you use the clutch after the initial launch? I am wondering because this article in Cycle World is actually advocating *not* shifting with the clutch. It seems that you have to control the throttle more to get it right. To me it would seem that it would be hard on the tranny, and another reader had questioned the same thing, but they point out how it really isn't any different fundamentally that shifting with the clutch. I have not tried it personally.

If I were gonna drag I'd get an air shifter
