Nitromethane Harley drags
A friend who works for AHDRA hooked me up with passes to Rockingham this past weekend. OMFG!!!!! I could really give a rat's ass about the other classes I love NITRO. I heard HP numbers of 800+ on these damn things. 200+ MPH quarters carrying the front wheel more than half the track. Totally unreal these things accelerate silly fast but the sound, man! You can count the licks of the twins when they idle but when they rap the throttle it is instant response. On the strip there is no build of power they go from idle to WFO(wide fu##ing open) instantly. The riders fight the damn things all the way down the track using their bodies to steer since the front wheel is useless. Talk about squirrely! These things wiggle all over the place with their monsters slicks. Slicks are so big the bikes don't need a stand though they do use them. The engine isn't between your legs you actually lie prone on the bike with the pistons inches under your chest and head. The guys wear kevlar vests like that'll do a bit of good. I was really interested in what kind of chain and sprockets they use. The chains are doubleroller designs, I dunno wtf sprockets they run. The bikes tranny seem to be one gear I never heard a change in their runs. This has got to be the most violent ride in motorsports. Simply brutal. The splash soundclip on the front page is a nitro twin doing it's burnout. Add about 180db and kick in some bass that compresses your lungs and you might imagine what it's like. ET's in the 6-7 second range.

"Chest Protection: Chest protectors are mandatory. "Ballistic chest protection" (meaning bullet proof) is a device worn to protect the rider's chest from puncture of flying debris in case of catastrophic engine explosion."
Heh, yeah.
"Fuel: Fuel to be mononitromethane and/or methyl alcohol only. No propylene oxide or nitrous allowed."

those things are awesome. ive seen them several times. down here in houston, were basically at sea level. that fact coupled with a nice coldfront makes our track one of the fastest in the country. our track is great for national records. a few winters ago, i personally witnessed the first sub-6 second nitro-bike pass in history in baytown, texas. it was unbelievable. very cool stuff.

I got excited just reading that first post. I just want to hear them. That clip doesnt do them justice. I cant immagine a sub 6 sec. run. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 200 mph+. how many of you would jump on one of those for a run down the strip????

i saw the results of some detonation in one of those motors. it took a pop up piston and turned it into a dish piston. it was like those dimples on the top of the caps for to go drinks that they push down to mark what drink is in the cup only it pushed the aluminum back in like that without breaking or cracking the piston.

Yeah the fuel Harleys are definately kewl to watch. I've seen them a few times at the AMA Prostar Races. Incredibly loud even at idle just loud "pop pop pop" "pop pop pop" sound. No mistaking its a HD when it fires up. Single speed Hi-gear only transmissions with slider clutch. Front wheel up in the air steering with body english. Very very neat to watch and hear. Quite a contrast listening to a HD VS a Japanese Top Fuel bike..

The harleys aren't running faster because they are better bikes. They are allowed much more dispacements and are allowed to have lighter bikes by the rules. Start allowing the inlines to match displacement and weight and they would whoop the harley's asses.

Show me a top fuel metric bike running sub 6's.
Besides, didn't Honda and Suzuki get to run more displacement with their twins in SBK? 1 liter twins vs. 750 I-4?

Not to start a pissing match but your misinformed if you think the HD's have the fastest fuelers, or Funny bikes or whatever. Ever heard of Larry "Spiderman McBride"
Larry McBride Poquoson, VA Kaw St. Louis 6/04 5.866
Larry McBride Poquoson, VA Kaw Richmond 5/02 243.59
I belive he holds the record for TF on a Metric KAWASAKI
I think I have a 5.99 pass on video someplace laying around.

Screamin' Eagle Nitro Harley Top Fuel
Winner Mike Romine .035 6.460 214.72
R/U Steve Stordeur .040 6.472 216.41
Long ways from 5 second 240 mph passes. Not much faster than the fastest Kawasaki Funnybike...

Yep, as stated, Harleys are allowed to run more displacement. I believe Hines is the fastest HD in NHRA Bike racing.
