Default Delay Boxes - Explanation?

I'm curious about delay boxes. From what I gather they're used at the start to launch your bike immediately at the green light, negating the effect of personal R/T.From the very little info I can find, you flip it on when the lights start to change, and it falls into time with them. How the hell does it do this? It obviously can't see the lights.

So basically; How do they work? How effective are they? When are they allowed?

It's a timer, they're effective-- like most other things-- when used properly, dono.

I race A super pro Big Block Chevy Vega w/ a delay box. Basically Instead of leaving on the bottoem bulb of the lighting tree to try to cut a perfect light, .500 in my class, you leave on the first yellow bulb. Now you have to run a transmission brake in order to do this, trans break keeps the tranmission in neutral allowing to rev the car on the torque converter. Once released it basically slams the trans into drive.
Once you and your opponent are staged the timing begins for the lights.
Instead of holding the trans break and letting go at the bottom yellow bulb you release at the top bulb.
Now the delay comes into the issue, it is timed to realease the trans break at a certain time. Now you can dial these boxes to the tenth, hundrenth, and thousand of a second. Now depending on what kind of tree your race track runs, depends on how much time you put in your box.
So once you are staged you release the trans break it holds the break once is has timed the lights down it realeases and hopefully if adjusted correctly results in a very good reaction time

Effective, yet restricted to specific motorcycle classes or not permitted depending on the track, event or sanctioning body.

If you are using this on a sportbike that you ride on the street it would be a waste of money. IMO, learn to cut quick lights and do it on ability versus technology. If it is for a Top Gas, Super Comp or like machine, the Delay Box would be a good add. Again, you'll need to see if it is permitted.
