Earlier in the season I made a tough decision and drastically reduced the number of events I'm running this season to better my situation overall, I selected Barber in Birmingham Alabama as 1 event I definately want to make. This is the 3rd season Barber will be open and the 3rd time I will be racing there, I'm really looking forward to returning to this awesome racing facility!
For those who have never been to Barber, this track is set in a park-like setting and the grounds are kept manicured similar to those of a golf course. The paddock is a multi-leveled set up in the side of a hill with the main control building being 3 stories tall and allowing spectators to go to the roof and spectate from there with a view of at least 3/4 of the track. This track is very rare in it's design and has 80 feet of elevation change thru the course of a lap, you rise and drop 6 times during a lap with much of that elevation change happening 5 of those times! The course has a definate rhythm (for those that understand what that is) and it can take you several turns to return to that rhythm in the event of a mistake. There are numerous challenging aspects to the track including decreasing radius turns, blind apex and/or exit turns, falling and rising turns, and the affectionately nick-named "Alabama coaster" which has been compared to the corkscrew at Laguna Seca.
My plan as of now is to be there for the August CCS event in a few weeks, I sure hope it's not 100* AGAIN! So who else is going to be there for the event?

Glad to hear you guys are planning on going, I'm trying to convince Mike J. to come with and I extended the offer to another freind of mine as well. If neither can go I will still go by myself, Barber is just too fun of a track to miss!

Karl and I will be going. This will be the first time there for me so I am really excited about going! I have heard nothing but good things about this facility! Mark B.
I would love to go, but I have already over spent the racing budget this year with suspension upgrades. My next race will be at VIR on Sep. 24-25. Are you going to try and make that?

I'm in the Midwest and also do Great Plaines region races, we don't get to VIR thru either of our regions. I've heard it's a fun track, mabey someday I will venture out that way.

VIR is great.... The track surface is nice and smooth with the exception of the turn 3 bump. I here Barber is really nice as well. I'm going to try my best to make it next year. How's the museum?

Mark, glad to hear your going! The only negatives I can think of about the facility itself is the lack of available power in the pits and the racing surface (and patch) conditions in several places due to the cars destroying the track as usual. The heat and rain have been an issue the last 2 years, both years it was 100* and the 1st year it rained like mad a couple of the days. Also the 13+ hour drive is long from here, but well worth it.

I'm almost ashamed that I have never gone thru the museum, after all it's entry fee is free if your there to race. I had good intentions to go, but never have, this year I will make an effort to go.

Sadly, I now won't be going to this event. Due to incurring MASSIVE debt back in the mid/late 90's, largly due to charging my racing expenses, I now race only when I have the cash to do so. It ended up I would have been going alone to this event so it would have cost me an easy $2000+ thru missing 3 days wages from work, travel expenses, hotel, entry fees, tires, & all the other costs involved to do this type of racing. Normally I would have 'bit the bullet' to go, but $2000 is a substantial portion of the closing costs involved in purchasing a house (that is the reason I stopped running the entire schedule this year). I need to stay focused on the bigger goal of home ownership so I regretfully made this choice. I look at it like this, it will be so nice to finally have a workshop/garage where I can work on my bikes and store all my stuff once I buy a house, having to work out of a rented storage shed sucks!
Best of luck to those that are actually going, I'm jealous!
