Default My F4i, now with GPS and heated grips.

Just a couple of quick pics of my bike. Added heated grips last fall, and just picked up my iQue 3600 GPS. I think I'll drop a tooth up front over the winter and be good for another year or two.

How much did the GPS setup run you? I don't know much about it, is there any monthly fee involved? Is it something that only works stateside? Or would it work over here in Italy too?

Thanks for the replies.

The grip heaters came from www.2wheelinnovations.com. Installation was fairly easy. As far as the heating elements themselves, simply remove the old grips (actually the hardest part of the job for me) , clean the handlebars of any old grip cement, apply the self adhesive heating elements, apply grip cement to the outside of the handlebars (they tell you what kind, needs to be able to withstand the high temps. If they don't, I can dig it up for you) and the inside of the grips, and slide the grips on. I used new grips because I wanted gels, but you can reuse your old grips too. For wiring, I ran power and ground up from the battery to a relay hiden udder the air duct cover on the left side of the bike. I tapped into the low beam headlght to control the relay so I can't accidentally drain the battery if I (or one of my, ahem, FRIENDS) leaves the grip heater switch on. You can see where I placed the switch. It's tight, and required a bit of Dremel action on the plastic shroud around the headlight aiming screw underneath the air duct cover, but the result was perfect. I love 'em. Really takes the bite out, and allows me to wear lighter gloves for more of the season, and ride comfortably into really low temps.

The iQue came from Buy.com and was about $420. I also bought a 1GB SD Card from Buy.com for about $180. This gives me plenty of room for dteailed maps of a few states around my area as well as a few hours of MP3 files. It's pretty sweet to be riding along listening to some of you favorite tunes and and have a lovely female voice come over the music and advise you to "turn left in 1.2 miles", show you the turn, and have the tunes come back. I've found I already do more exploring than I used too, knowing exactly where I am and what roads go where. I'm pretty sure Garmin has European coverage as well. Check their site. And there is no monthly fee. The Mount is called a StemStand and comes from www.stemstand.com. The iQue clip is made by RAM, and waspurchased from GPSCity.com.

Good luck, and let me know if I can answer any questions.

I really like that GPS system; it is something I plan on getting at some point since I can have it on the bike and while travelling in the cage. As a college student, however, funds are always limited.

Also, very nice looking bike; and great choice of color (mine is silver/black as well).

That's pretty bad ass I would have to say. Heated grips though, gloves weren't enough, or do you even wear them? I wonder if that set up would work with a steering damper?

Interesting idea with the GPS...do you really use it that much? I mean I could see if you do alot of weekend traveling, but if you are in area you know and ride alot is it worth it??

Like the idea of the heated grips...espically in cold weather.

It might be overkill for normal people around their home town, but I am incredibly bad with directions, and have a lousy memory to make matters worse, so I use it all the time. I actually do some fairly long multi day rides in unfamiliar areas, and I find it really usefull for exploring. Seeing where a road goes in the context of the surrounding area is very handy. In short, its perfect for me. YMMV.

Gloves are good enough for me for moderately low temps, but I ride down into the teens, and then the heated grips make the difference. I also like the ability to be able to use lighter weight, less bulky, gloves for more of the year. Again, whatever works for ya!

I went with the "Heated Grip Kit with round switch, relay." Part number 1202. Like I mentioned, this keeps me from draining the battery if I forget to turn the grip heaters off, which is every time I use them.

BTW, I didn't need them ONCE in West Palm Beach over the Holidays!=8)
