Hay all, i really need to know. Iv been riding my f4i for about a year now. I have about 4800 miles on it. Iv been using honda oil on all three oil changes. I know the manual says not to use synthetic cause it screws up your clutchs. Is this true, or they just pushing there oil. Can a differnt set of clutchs be used. Whats your in put on this. Thanks to all.
I don't think synthetic ruins the clutch, but it isn't recommend on engines with less than 10K miles or so. Many people debate that automotive oil (non-motorcycle-specific oil) can ruin the clutch, but many other people use Mobil-1 20w-50 synthetic auto oil in their bikes; I did on my '93 F2 without issues.
Honda makes their own variety of normal and synthetic oil so sales isn't the reason for it. I think the synthetic stuff is called GN4 (something like that).
Personally, I would stick to the regular Honda oil for now on your bike.
Do you have a 'special' manual? Well...for my 929 (Service or Owners) manual there is no mention of NOT using synthetic. There is however a statement about using incorrect 'type' oils. SG/JASO MA is the type certification the oil should have for a moto use (resolves clutch slip problems).
I have been using Amsoil 10W40 Synthetic since 5k miles (now have 28k miles) with no problems, only positive results to speak of (shifts better, longer duration between oil changes, etc).
ALL of my vehicles are being converted to Amsoil (one more to go). Buy it by the case with a Preferred Member discount - you wont be disappointed.
This is the only story I've heard of it actually happening.
A coworker of mine claims the clutch in his ZX9 started slipping by simply changing to automotive oil in an attempt to save money. Went back to moto specific and the slipping went away. FWIW.
I believe Sport Rider did an extensive article on oils about a year ago, was very good, but didn't come to any distinct conclusions.
Fully synthetic oil can affect ring seating in a new engine, hence the reccommendation to stay away during break-in.
Honda also sells a semi-synthetic oil. This is what I use, it's cheaper than synthetic, but will give additional protection from oil breakdown.
Automotive oils use additives to greatly reduce friction (helps them gain a little gas mileage) which can cause your clutch to slip or fail earlier than it would if cycle-specific oil was used. Personally, saving a couple of bucks isn't worth the chance of getting stranded.

Most everyone of my friends use Mobile-1 or rotella T! I'm still using GN4 but will be switching next change. I'm pretty sure that synthetic is ok to use as long as it's NOT energy-conserving. As oldschlpunk said about the "additives that greatly reduce friction", that is what makes certain oils energy-conserving and will make the clutch slip. I've even seen in some motorcycle shops that when they change oil/oil filters on bikes they put mobile-1 back into it! My .02!
Not the first time i've heard of it had a few friends go to synthetic cause it cost more so they figured it was better for bikes shoulda seen em trying to clutch up wheelies. I Been usin Gn4 get a good hook up on it from my local shop bike seems to like it
I've used HP4 with no problems, but on my last oil change I used GN4 and the shifting actually felt better after that.
I'm thinking about trying Repsol synthetic on the next one to see if there is a difference.

i'm confused, my local honda shop has honda oil, and cheap shit... they also sell the castrol 10w40 synthetic for like 10 a quart...
on my next oil change i was going to run 0w40 mobil 1, or should i use 20w50 instead?
so, im lost as to how synthetic oil ruin's the clutches?? i've got 11k on my bike now, and from what friends have told me, and what they've used, automotive oil is fine???
