Take it to court if for nothing else to get the points knocked off. You might be able to get driving school and be put on probation.
As far as your actions you didn't do anything wrong. Some officers can see a helmet as a potential weapon, but if you hang it on the mirror or put it on the ground you would be ok. Just don't hold it in your hand. Cops like to SEE empty hands. If you got the ticket and their has been complaints about the speed discretion might have been removed from the officer meaning the brass says you WILL write for XX amount over.

Like I posted on another forum. Look at a ticket busters sort of place. Lawyers run it and you pay them $100 bucks, they go to court reduce it to a parking fine and you pay the parking fine. It'll cost you a little under $275 total. Better than just being screwed all the way around.

Thanks for the info. I guess that makes sense, is there anyway you can make sure that the officer REALLY clocked you, or is it just a matter of your word against his?

Our department has to keep radar logs of of the people stopped. It is a department policy, so unless they do that too it may be your word against his.

So if you were approaching a rider on a traffic stop and he took his helmet off as you got close, the thought of him swinging it at you wouldn't cross your mind?
If you're still sitting on the bike, how hard can you swing it? You can't exactly put your body into it. I can't imagine it affecting the cop beyond pissing him off and causing him to shoot you.

How do you know he didn't have radar? The cops where I used to have had omni directional radar that was mounted at various points throughout the body of the car, you'd never know they were there unless you asked.
