If you're past the line when it turns red, are you legally still running the light?
Just wondering..
My dad was a cop, and the way I remember him telling me was that, if you have crossed the "stop here" line, then you are technically IN the intersection. If you have made it into the intersection while the light is still yellow, then you haven't ran the red.
So, if you're past the line when it turns red, you should be okay.
here, if you're not across the intersection by the time its red (if there is a crosswalk on the otherside, you must completely clear it / no crosswalk then you must clear the corners), you've run a red light.
If the light turns red while you're in the intersection, you've run a red.

I wonder if the state realizes how much money they could make off of one rush hour afternoon on Kam hwy if they enforced that.
Coming home tonight by waimano home road I counted 10 cars that were still turning when our light was green.
Good for them...I'm against ANY cameras that will issue tickets...If they want to use cameras to look for spots where they need to patrol...that's OK with me...but getting a ticket in the mail from some camera hanging on a post just sounds like KGB or Nazi tactics to me...Hello...Is George Orwell Home??

I would think this is the law in most/all places, but it's just not enforced. Case in point I was riding through town the other day, stopped at a light next to a cop. A car on the road perpendicular to us made a turn on to our street blatantly running the red (our light was green before they were done turning) and the cop didn't do anything. Was probably paying more attention to me hoping I was going to do some massive standups down the street.
Hope that's a joke since part of the license exam in Connecticut requires a vision portion, complete with a color segment. Tell that to a judge and they'll have you provide documentation of the fact or test you again. If you can't tell color, you can't drive safely and they'll just take your license. Good plan.

In Texas, if you have entered the intersection and the light turns red (past the stop line), you are clear to proceed. If you slam on the brakes and end up just past the stop line, you have just (failed to stop at designated point).
In Wisconsin...
346.37(1)(b)
(b) Yellow. When shown with or following the green, traffic facing a yellow signal shall stop before entering the intersection unless so close to it that a stop may not be made in safety.
