yea sorry its not just a business card it says it is a courtesy card and is very different from a business card but it is that size... i dont just hand it to them for the first one i brought it up "sorry i was talking to my friend officer blah blah and he didnt think there was any law against it" "do you have a card from him?" "yea right here" then the second time i left my wallet open on the tank and it is very visible so he asked me who's card it was.
Lane splitting is the term for when you do it while traffic is moving. Filtering is just moving to the front of a stopped line at a red light or something. People who live in states in which lane-splitting is illegal seem to appreciate the difference between the terms more than those of us in CA
No shit? Thats interesting. I've never heard of anything like that out here. It would seem like the officer on the traffic stop would need some more proof that it is actually meant to be a courtesy card. Like someone else mentioned, sometimes officers give out report/incident numbers to people on their business cards.
To be honest I would feel pretty stupid flashing something like that at a traffic stop. I don't even show my Police (civilian) ID when I get pulled over. I could see if I was a sworn officer saying "btw, I'm an off-duty officer and my carry weapon is in this location", but flashing a cop's business card would feel pretty lame to me. Like "I really have no valid reason for you to extend professional courtesy since I'm not a cop or anything, but I know this guy, so..." I would probably laugh in their face if I was a cop haha. If you're not a cop yourself or I know you personally, you don't get to use a courtesy card.
Either your new to the civilian side of the department you work for ( dispatcher perhaps?), or CA does it way differently than NJ.
In NJ there are a few types of courtesy cards. Most are from the FOP ( police union) There is also a PBA ( also union) and STFA ( State Police Union). Most of these are honored, sometimes the officer will take the driver's info. that was stopped to confirm their status with the officer who gave them the card at a later time. If the info. doesn't check out, they get their ticket in the mail. In NJ, if you don't honor someones card, most guys get pissed and problems start between departments.
The business card thing, at least in NJ., is most of the time given to witnesses or people accused in a case that have been charged with a crime. No special treatment given to them for obvious reasons.

Advanced warning: We don't have those here in MD, and if you show it and officer will probably look at you and go with the hell is this? I am a member of our FOP and never heard of it. Is it something that the state lodges do?
It is an interesting idea, but lets say the speed is 100 in a 45 are you still expected to honor the card?

Well I've been with the department for about a year and a half and am good friends with some of the officers - I assume they would at least tell me if there was something like this, or I would have heard about it from other people. I honestly think courtesy cards don't exist in CA. Which is fine with me - like I said, I wouldn't honor them.

i don't know for sure kneedraggin but one of my co-workers asked one of our officers and he siad it would probably even get you out of a drinking situation as long as you weren't wasted or anything

Sure good to know that the laws apply to everyone fairly and that people are willing to accept the consequences of there own actions.
