Safe guard your information as best you can. If you do get a summons to appear in court contact the court and find out the officer's name and contact that officer. The only thing most people need to get is your full name and DOB. Once they have that and give that to the officer the officer can get the rest. It is basically identity theft and it should be reported.

I had a case where the person I stopped knew everything about a guy. Name, address, SSN, DOB, come to find out my victim was the drivers friend growing up. The victim contacted me and I have since gotten a warrant for the driver.

I tried this once unfortunately on a 'no tags' stop... I wasn't trying to pin someone else with a ticket or anything, just trying to keep from getting arrested since I knew I had warrants for not paying tickets and my license was suspended. I pretended to be a guy I grew up with who was nearly identical to me physically. Knew all his info, etc... unfortunately the cop who pulled me over knew me from another stop a few weeks earlier, so I ended up getting arrested anyways. When he said, "Ok, I'll give you one last chance to tell me the truth before I charge you with criminal impersonation" I knew the jig was up and came clean. Ended up spending a night in jail and getting all my tickets taken care of... on a payment plan no less! Turned out it was a good thing I got arrested after all...

Yea the guy I stopped had open warrants. That is why he gave me the wrong name, but the warrant was nothing major, but now he has a warrant for "false identification to a police officer to avoid prosecution" Much more serious then his original warrant.

Not really a whole lot you can do to prevent it other than what kneedraggin pointed out.

I stopped a car one night andthe guy gave me a false name but didn't know it was false until later. When I ran the it came back with several felony warrants so I hooked him up! By the time it got to court we found the guy's real name and all he had was a small simple assault warrant that he would have gotten 6 months of probation over! Lesson here: if you use someone else's name.....make sure they are cleaner than you are!!

step 1: buy a car in Arkansas

step 2: lose your job so you can't afford insurance, and therefore can't get tags

step 3: drive beyond the 30 day 'grace period' you are given to get your tags taken care of.

I had someone try the false name with me. Here is the story----

Disturbance call. I show up and start talking with Shithead A. He gives me the name Mike Hunt (not really). He gives his date of birth. I am going to arrest this guy, so I run his name NCIC for warrants. Comes back clear. Since e said he was driving, I aske for his driver's license. Doesn't have it, doesn't know his number. I run name and DOB. Comes back valid. I aske dispatch for the description of the person issued that license. 6'2"- 280 Lbs. Mr. Hunt is all of 5'7" 165 Lbs.

Gotcha---- 148.9 PC
