Truckers Promote Move-Over Law!!

The move-over law is designed to keep enforcement officers and help crews safe on the side of the road. Wednesday, the Department of Safety announced a new partnership with truckers to keep the law on the minds of drivers.

Some companies that are members of the Tennessee Trucking Association will now have decals on their trucks reminding people to move over one lane when crews or law enforcement is on the side of the road. The law was enacted almost two years ago.

There are also posters with information about the law that will be placed in break-rooms at Wal-Mart and Sam's Club stores in Tennessee.

The widow of Trooper Todd Larkins was at the announcement on Wednesday. Todd Larkins was killed last summer when he was struck and killed by a tractor trailer as he was conducting a traffic stop.

His widow is thankful these companies are helping to make people aware of the law.

Drivers who violate the law face a $50 fine. But lawmakers are pushing to increase the fine. Last year 340 violators were ticketed.

That law is a great idea. Glad to hear truckers are getting onboard and helping promote it too.

I agree! I have had my share of nights dodging mirrors and cars. I damn near got ran over 3 times in 2 hours one night! In areas near my city we had 4 officers that got killed last year by people hitting them on traffic stops.

Standing on the side of the road talking to someone and an 18 wheeler flys by at 80mph, that is an experience!

Ain't that the truth!! Seeing 50 tons of steel rolling at you at 80mph makes think about a career change

I'm probably more afraid that I might hear that he got hit by a car rather than hurt some other way in the line of duty. Our neighbor, who is also his shift corporal, actually did get hit by a car driven by some old man while he was directing traffic. He is ok just got a few bumps and bruises but that was really scary!

+1 to moving over. I always move over unless I'm boxed in. Lately I have seen officers approach the passenger side of the vehicles that are pulled over. Is this a new policy aimed at officer safety? It seems like a safer side to be on! I wouldn't want to play chicken with an 18wheeler!

DAmn.. would be nice if thats what the emergency vehicles had to deal with down here....

The grey hairs dont see the ambulance/fire truck/cop car when they are behind them... and if they do accidently see them, they WILL slam on the brakes right in front of them. I see it happen all the time.

And the one time I did see an old fart actually move onto the shoulder, was the time the ambulance was going on the shoulder (stopped traffic on a bridge), and the old person pulled onto the shoulder and stopped in front of the ambulance and wouldnt move.. they had to go around them.

And how again are they not a threat to everyone on the road?!?!?

But yeah, I always get over when I see an officer doing his business.

I've had two friends get killed this way. Both by truckers who wasn't paying attention. There shouldn't be a need for a law, it should be common sense.

Good law i hope they adopt it in NYC. However i would modify it to include broken down vehicles and road crews.

Yeah they started teaching this alot now....plus the person behind the wheel of the car doesn't know where the officer will be all the time so they can't spring out and try to assault the officer. More than once I have seen people looking over the left shoulder wondering where I am when I walk up and knock on the passenger window

I agree with ya there! I have seen too many good officers/people get killed from this.
