Default Buddy Involved in Shootout

Last night, a good friend and fellow Sergeant was involved in a shooting.
He's ok, but he might lose his pinky finger on his shooting hand.
The bad guy and he exchanged gunfire at the same time. The first round fired at my buddy struck his weapon and disabled it, wounding him in his little finger. He was able to get off one round prior to that, most likely striking the suspect. My buddy's car was peppered with rounds and then the suspect and the driver of the vehicle sped off.

This was off duty. And it serves as a reminder as to why I always carry my weapon. He was very lucky.

He should be ok. I talked to him today and he's in good spirits. Just waiting to see about the extent of the damage to his finger.

Never heard the shots, didn't know he was hit until his weapon wouldn't fire and he took cover behind his vehicle to clear it.
That's when he saw his hand and the split in the side of his weapon. Very lucky! That round could've hit him dead center in his face.

Holy shit brotha!!! Let him know the other "boys in blue" wish him a speedy and good recovery. That shit is nuts!! Seems the bad guy was target fixated also, when he saw the gun come out and shot at the threat. Any clue as to what it was about?

We just covered some of this in my in-service today! I carry off duty all the time, been caught once without my gun off duty and it WILL NEVER happen again.

Hope he gets better, and people wonder why we carry off duty.

Was this a case where "bad guy" RECOGNIZED a police officer, or would "bad guy" have initiated hostilities on just anyone?
