Default Police Video Cameras???

Do you folks think police cars should or should not be equipped with dash cams? And why do you think the way you do?

I do... and i'm not sure how they work now, but I think that as soon as you hit the lights/sirens the video should start recording. This wouldn't just benefit the police officer, but also the person being pulled over. This way the police officer would be less likely to harass, and the person being pulled is less likely to do something stupid. (or at least he would be recorded doing it!)
I'm sure alot of people wouldn't like this... but an even stronger way to make sure police arn't being verball abusive or abused would be to equip them with a wireless microphone on their uniform. This way when the cop pulls someone, everything would be recorded. We've certainly got the technology, but probably not the money?!

good post Most depts. are installing them for all the reasons you listed. The cost is expensive...about $5k per car. I will take a picture of my unit tonight and post it up on here tomorrow morning.

I absolutely, positively agree that police cars should have dash cams. Just based on some of the stories I have heard about people getting killed, police officers and civilians alike, during the routine traffic stop.

Not to mention all the crazy police videos I have seen on "Wildest Police Videos" and of course my private police video source.

It serves a two-fold purpose in terms of protecting the PO. First it prevents people from telling lies or accusing the PO of being unprofessional in anyway; it also shows who he has stopped in the event of a tragedy. Videos can protect the citizen who has been stopped because there could be proof in their favor of a mistake or bad action taken on the Police Officer's part!!

Personally I like my camera in my car and with the audio transciever I wear all that is said is also on the tape. I have seen officers MURDERED on tape and the tape be used in the conviction of the suspect. They are also used to train people going through the academy as well. It has also gotten some bad officers off the road as well. I have had a few complaints that were unfounded lodged and the tape backed up my side of it everytime and really discredited the complaint!

A few nights ago I arrested a guy for DUI and on tape he said he would have my job and lie and say that I slammed his face on the trunk of his car. The entire scene was on tape as well as him saying he fabricate the story just to have me fired. Can't wait to see that one go in front of a judge!!

Aren't these the same fuck-stick limp-wristed soft-life insulated-from-ordinary-people judges that let these repeat offenders off with little or no (crowded) jail time, time after time?

A couple years of listening to my local frequency scanner has shown me that its the same stupid people getting caught for doing the same stupid things by the same officers. Why are these people still out of prison?

They need to put cameras in the courtroom. Funny how most judges I've heard express opinions are against THAT.

I like cameras in police cars. Honest line officers seem to like them, too, which is usually a good barometer.

I disagree with remote metro-area-wide closed-circuit camera monitoring. I also disagree with red-light cameras and photo-radar vehicles. But you didn't ask about that. I WILL NOT BE TICKETED BY A MACHINE.
