Buell Blast?? Questions.
There has been a lot of enthusiams for single cylinder motard bikes. I like the idea and look, but not the ride height. How are singles to ride instead of twins or 4 cylinders? Can anyone comment on the Buell Blast as a city squirt bike? I understand it has a Rotax engine and that's a plus. Appreciate your comments. I know it is no status symbol, is there any potential to upgrade it and hide the Buell name??
Supposedly Buell unvailed a dirtbike to the dealers not to long ago. So you may not need to mod a Blast in to one. I believe the intention is to get in to racing, but it probably wouldn't take much to have a sick motard. Go to www.badweatherbikers.com and search for Buell Dirtbike.
The Blast doesn't have a Rotax engine, it is basically a liter Sportster motor with the rear cylindar removed.
It's a fun little bike, but I'm not sure it would be much of a motard bike, as it has a long stroke and heavy flywheel, making for a slow accelerating engine. Besides that, the suspension isn't adjustable.
Buell does have a bike they are calling a motard. The suspension/ride height is midway between the XB12 and the Ulysses. Looks fun. Probably heavier than other bikes though. That Sportster motor is a tank. At least the weight is lower.

I go Beltway blitzin' on my mad mofo musclebike WFO. Its a true choice, a god-like experience if you will. The thought that I could buy the farm in a spectacular fireball...................well, that gives me a stiffie! Tesco Vee/The Meatmen
I rode the TT, which is the motard bike you are talking about. I came away with good impressions. The power is great and in general so is the riding position and handling. It is nothing like the Uly, please do not even think of comparing it to it. it is a pure "fun"bike designed to carve canyons and look like a motard. It also is just a motard look alike as it is way too heavy for a true motard. On the flipside, it is fun, has awsome power and great handling. The bike is more stable than the lightning, which is a good thing, but make sure if you hit the throttle that you are leaning into the bike to weight down the front, as it will bet very light if not ans be scary.
Buell is supposed to be coming out with a rotax powered dirt bike (which sounds like the first step towards a rotax powered motard) in the next year or two. It is starting to sound like it may be here next year.
As a whole Buell should be doing some updating of their product lines shortly. The Firebolt and Lightning have been around in the same basic configuration since 2003. They did add the 1203cc motor in 2004, and they have done updates and added new versions like the Uly, CityX and TT since then too. The look and basic ideas behind the XB bikes has been in production for 5 model years now. That is way longer than you'll see any Japanesse bikes go, but they also hit their break even point a lot quicker because they sell so many more bikes.
A Blast is a good commuter bike, something like over 60 mpg. A coworker owned one, but a motard it's not. If you want some jump, I'd look at a different Buell. If you want status, buy a Ducati. Best wishes to you,

Thanks for the info. I was trying to get a light fun bike without having to go through the dirt to street bike conversion. That slug of an engine won't make it happen for me. I think the new TT is too pricey as well. I love the ZZR600, just a bit tall in the saddle.
I have had a Buell Blast for over a year. You have the option of adding the "BUELL" stickers on the bike. I don't like them. I get over 70+ mpg. At 30 HP, acceleration is slow but mid-range (top end of 2nd and all of 3rd gear) is best in my experience with the bike. Great commuter, light weight and fun to ride. Got a Vans and Hines muffler on it which makes it LOUD !!!
