those are little spotlights, pretty common on beemers.

Motolight they are called... Work very well. The stock lights on the BMW R1100S are pretty poor. The Motolights make night into day, without blinding on coming traffic. Not cheap thought... But looks cool during the night. Almost like a UFO is coming towards you.
