Just reading the title of the thread, I thought you were talking about someone actually stealing the motor out of a bike.

I thought, damn, now that's a fast working thief!

+1, I thought the same thing.

They make disk brake locks also, but this doesn't prevent someone from picking the bike up and putting it in the back of their truck or you trying to ride away(for a couple feet) with the lock still on hte disk.

safety = combination of various things.

1)disc lock
2)alarm
3)the most important bit is getting a good chain and a good padlock to secure your bike on something fixed (like a pole for example)

+1 for insurance, and full coverage even if the loan is paid off.

ok im new to bikes. I didn't even know you can put a alarm on your bike. Is there a lot of motorcylce alarm brands out there. If so can you name a couple so I could look into them. Because Im getting a bike in the next couple of months and will be getting one. And I have heard of people going to local malls or whereever and picking up the bikes and putting them in the back of their trucks.

This is my experience with this matter. My friend has had 4 bikes stolen right off his property and all 4 bikes were locked up. He has a huge piece of property thats somewhat secluded, huge gate and 2 guard dogs. I've had just one bike stolen, luckly just one. To get to my bikes, you have to break open the main gate, get thrue my garage, alarm, and I also have 2 guard dogs. One's an ex-police german shepherd, other one is one we trained. What's the point to my little story? If they want it, THEY WILL TAKE IT! Doesnt matter what you have in terms of preventive measures, they will take it. And if they can get it out of your house in broad daylight, they can steal it from practically anywhere. Your best bet is insurance. I have state farm and full coverage including Home Theft Insurance. And at 19, its only around 1900 every six months.

I'm personally getting Lo Jack installed on my bike this friday... and my father has also put it on his Harley. Besides that, i keep it in the garage, its in a garage where i work when i have to work, and i just dont ride it to the mall or wherever where you're going to be off of it for a while where its left out in the open where people can easily jack it

It just sucks that people cant buy anything nice without worrying about it being stolen, even if it ways a crazy amount of pounds and they dont have the key to it...
