This is something I have thought about, but I just don't think I have the right personality for it.

Also, moderating any of the "open" forums is probably 1000x harder than a technical forum.

I'm thinking that the criteria for modding an open forum should be a lot tougher than a technical forum.

Personally I think there should be NO moderation.... but unfortunately the majority of SB.net members can't be left w/o a baby sitter

Have you seen how a forum gets with no mods????

I have a fairly thick skin, but it will descend into madness in no time.

Last unmoderated forum I was on became so overrun with crazies that you couldn't even have a conversation.

As an example, we would try to have a serious thread and someone would come in with something like "F**K N***RS, WHITE POWER FOR AMERICA!" and everything would get out of hand in no time.

Forums, like societies, need some order.

Too much order and expression suffers.

Too little and it turns into madness.

This forum, imho, has achieved a near perfect balance, and I salute the mods here for doing an incredible (and often thankless) job.

exactly... that's why i say that the majority of SB.net members can't be left w/o a babysitter.

The regional forum I'm a member of has practically ZERO moderation. We've got three admins and a forum technician that make sure the site runs smoothly and that's it. The forum members police themselves. Best forum EVER.

Unfortunately that would NEVER work here because there's too many asshats that would ruin it for the rest of us.

Anyway, we're gettin off topic here.

So, are there like monthly meetings or something? Do you get one of those cool hallway monitor sashes that says "Moderator"?
What happened to the last ones? Killed in the line of duty?

From time to time, a moderator will simply move on. Maybe they are spending too much time online, maybe they get away from motorcycles, maybe......?

I haven't seen much moderation lately Fred, is that a bad thing?

I'm all for people following rules and I support mods 100% for their thankless task but have we been doing a good job of self policing lately?

Of course I have no idea what input you get from long time members.
