I think that whether the motivation is political, social, or political it really becomes about propaganda. The primary motivation for islamic terrorists is that the evil west is oppressive to the good and holy middle east. It becomes harder to believe that (to the average muslim) when the west has elected a president who appears to have ties to islam. The job of the al-qaeda leadership has just gotten a little bit harder.
