If you're going to use a lift like that, put it under the bike and raise it until it's holding the bike upright. Then strap the bike to the lift and raise it on up. I do it all the time with 800 pound Harleys.

There are other ways to do it, also. You can use one of these stands that lifts the bike up from the bottom. Right now I've got the rear wheel off of the Ol' Lady's dirt bike with it up on a regular sportbike type rear stand.
