By "just as well" I would expect:
Same accuracy.
Same precision.
Same ease of use.
Same durability.
If you can really build one for $15 that has all of these same traits, that is great. Personally, I have looked at a lot of the home made designs and the ones I have seen appear to have some disadvantages compared to the store bought model.
However, the question is whether or not those differences are worth the $85 difference in price.
