I've bought bikes for commuter duty, and other bikes for recreation.
I had an '81 Honda CM200t that I used as a daily rider. It was about the size of a Honda Rebel, and got about 75 mpg. I did absolutely NO sporting or hot rodding. It was for riding to work and back.
My other bikes have been bought simply for recreation. I bought them to ride on nice days and on the weekends. I could give a damn what gas costs, I'm still going to ride.
I have no problem with someone buying a bike to save gas. That's one of the advantages of having a bike in the first place.
