If its a revolver that I'm using for home defense, I would leave the top chamber empty. (Had a teacher this year take a considerable chunk out of his leg when his .44 fell out of the holster he was carrying in his hand.) as for a shotgun at least don't put a round in the chamber. Also when he's old enough (I assume its a he) teach your kid about the dangers of firearms, then teach him how to identify if a weapon is loaded and to check every time he picks one up. Then teach him how to effectively use that weapon. That will keep you alot safer than worrying about somebody breaking in.

Ok although I dont preach the one in the chamber while in the house, I dont understand the rest of what your saying, maybe if your afraid of the gun and do not know how to properly handle it you shouldnt have it?
