I use my '07 for commuting when the weather allows here in Maryland. I have a 62 mile commute one way which my past 3 cars register the same distance traveled within a mile of each other. Yet when I ride my bike to work and home on the same 124 mile round trip highway the bike registers 142 miles traveled. The sprockets and tires are stock. So not only does the speedo read high but so does the odometer on my '07 FZ6. I don't think the guys at yamaha are trying to make us think we are going faster than reality, I just think they made a miss calculation. The speedo error and the odometer error are close to being off the same amount.
