Actually, these kinds of traumatic amputations are becoming more rare every year. The most significant reduction came when guardrails got rounded ends. My neighbor, btw, lost a leg to a guardrail in the 70s.
Most bikers die from blunt trauma these days. It's highly likely that this one can be put down to rider inexperience or lack of basic training.
