I am a professional petrolium dispenser. From what I have gathered over the years of pumping gas, I can confirm all of this. I've heard these tips several times.
In regards to the "slow" setting, it's really not that much of a difference. Sometimes, when people are bitching about being in a rush and to make it snappy, I put it on slow. Like I said, not much of a difference but it makes me feel like I'm doing my part. In fast mode, our pumps will do 6 gallons a minute. I'm not exactly sure about "slow" but I'm guessing around 5 gallons. So let's say a 15 gallon tank will fill in 2 and a half minutes. If you go slow, it should still only take 30 seconds longer.
If you really are in a hurry, don't get gas right when the station opens. Most of the time, it takes a while for the pumps to prime and it can take up to 15 minutes to pump $5 in gas. Both places I have worked at are like this so I'm assuming most, if not all, are the same way.
