I agree with you that political prisoners should not be executed.
But property crime? Some of them really hurts a LOT of people. I feel that a criminal who embezzled hundreds of millions of dollars off employee's retirement fund deserves to die much more than someone who killed a couple people. Even with all those death penalties, local officials are still as corrupted as they ever get. "Get rich fast then flee to another country" is becoming the standard.
Taking death penalties away, it is all toooo easy for the rich to get away once the spot light shifts. After all, the threat of death penalty really only affect an extremely small fraction of people, and it is pretty safe to say none of them is innocent.
What I don't like about AI is that they keeps applying their standard to people who they neither really know or care. It is all about what is the absolutely "right" thing.

As the article notes, China executes people for property and political crimes, and the judicial system is heavily biased toward the state. It's not a question of if mistakes are made and innocent people are executed in China - it's only a question of how many hundreds are mistakenly prosecuted and executed every year.
