I weighed the pro's and con's of replacing/painting the tank and it's going to be a lot less hassle and quicker to replace it.
I can buy a new 2008 black one for $327 and then sell the red for $200 or so. I doubt that I could find someone who could paint the tank for under $127 (labor + paint/etc).
I wish I could finish it this weekend. 
I'll probably just install all the cosmetic accessories, separate the headlight housing, and attach the fork brackets.
Still need to paint the fairing and order the gas tank. I have a lot of soldering, heatshrinking, and wirewrapping to do also. Fun, fun, fun.

That's definitely the best way to go about the tank... I should have done the same thing
Make sure you test all the eletrical before you heatshrink/wirewrap the whole shiznet
