The sensors on the machine are fairly accurate, but only measure a heart rate for 10 to 15 seconds and then do the math. Ok on most occasions, but if you have any sort of abnormal heart rythym or you skip a beat every now and then it could be off a bit. They are good for knowing where you are at in terms of work load and are much better than the burned calorie counters that base off your age and wieght and inputed work load.
It's a good medium  you can always check it against your own count. Take a measurement on there, and then check your own pulse for a full minute.

i am of the opinion these monitors are not too accurate (at least my experience).
