I just did my first day of riding for the BRC today as well.
Our rider coaches said the difference between the two exercises (far apart and closer together/offset) is for the close ones you use counter-weight (turning the handlebars) instead of counter steering (press in direction you wanna go).
Also to use the clutch to control speed since you have to go a bit slower.
I did pretty ok on that...my BIGGEST problem is taking off in first gear

I stalled like crazy during the second half of the day. My left hand was cramping up.
