...and of course:
A1) Tank protection really varies, and it also depends on where you're experiencing your "scuffing".... on the top, or the sides. personally, I used the tankslapper product and have been very pleased with it. It was only $15 I think.

A2) Yes, it is possible, and it's fairly easy. Do a search for "pod mod" and all will be revealed.
A3) This will garner a lot of different opinions... personally, I use a Xena alarmed disc lock, and I've been very pleased with it. I like the fact that it attracts attention because it's so annoyingly loud.
