FTP, I suspect you got a bum set, they weren't properly inflated, had a puncture, or incorrectly mounted/balanced.
They're decent tires. Not good, but adequate. When I had them they warmed up to full operating temps in the first 3 easy laps. Long warm up, but that's okay with me.
And I could lean them far enough over to get my knee down.
Not as good as the Michelins, Contis, Pirellis, etc...but okay. More grip than your regular sport touring tire. And that's all most people really need.
I think the bad reputation comes from the warm-up times. On the street you will NEVER get them at full temps (unless you live by some great roads). To get satisfactory grip it probably takes 20 minutes of hard street riding. They're slippery when cold and suck in the rain.
But if you properly warm them up they perform just fine.
