VIRGINIA BEACH - A woman accused of trying to smother to death her sleeping husband
- an off-duty city police officer
- pleaded guilty this morning to conspiracy to commit murder.
In return, prosecutors dropped a charge of attempted murder against Michelle C. DeAngelis, 35.
Circuit Judge Patricia L. West did not immediately accept the plea agreement. She will rule at a sentencing hearing April 17.
Under terms of the plea agreement, DeAngelis would serve 18 months in jail, followed by a year of electronic home monitoring.
DeAngelis was accused - along with her mother, Rosemary Elling, 66, and her brother, Hanns Herzog, 38 - of trying to kill Officer Albert DeAngelis while he slept Oct. 27 in his home on River Oak Circle.
DeAngelis was accused of letting her mother and brother into the house earlier in the day and waiting until he came home and fell asleep. Police say the three then tried to smother the police officer, but he awoke and overcame his attackers.
A detective testified earlier this month that DeAngelis tried to kill her husband because he was emotionally abusive to her.
