The first time I dumped my R1, I was sooo pissed and the adrenaline was flowing (plus a burned leg, busted knee, and cut shin, didn't help) I picked the bike up like it was a bicycle. It never even stopped running.
The second time, when it rolled away from me down my back yard, I didn't have the adrenaline rush and I tried the "backwards grip" using my legs and it wasn't difficult at all.
That's probably the best method to keep from straining or pulling something.
