On Central Pike and Dodson Chapel Road in Hermitage, police were on the scene of a high-speed chase, kidnapping, and shooting late Friday morning.
Two accidents are involved in this incident. One of them is at Old Hickory Boulevard and Andrew Jackson; the other is at Dodson Chapel and Central Pike.
About a mile-long stretch from Dodson Chapel to James Kay Lane on Central Pike was blocked. The police officers who were on the scene were not injured.
Police got a report that someone was kidnapped at the BP gas station on Old Hickory Boulevard near Dodson Chapel Road around 10:40 Friday morning. A detective pulled up on the scene, and a woman jumped out of the car and said she was being held by an armed man. At that point, another woman jumped out of the same car.
Police started chasing the driver, who is identified as Lazarus A. Payton, 23, of 14th Ave. North. The chase ended at a stop sign when Payton crashed and ran into two other cars. A lady was in one of the cars. She was taken to Vanderbilt by life flight helicopter. She is in critical condition.
Two other people were taken to Summit hospital with less severe injuries. When police approached the suspect’s car, he jumped into the back seat and started grabbing marijuana and also firing shots.
It is unclear if he was firing shots at police. Payton did shoot himself twice in the lower abdomen during the ordeal. He has been taken to Vanderbilt hospital.
