I do it without removing the fairing. I took a washer slovent bottle and hacked it up to act as a big funnel to catch the filter and oil that comes out. I used the top part of the bottle and the cap now acts as the bottom.

The only catch is that I don't warm the engine before an oil change. I just let it drain for a while. All the oil is in the oil pan from the last time I rode. I don't let the oil get really old before I change it anyway. But I snake this thing I made in the front opening and wedge it between the inside of the fairing and the header.

Taking off the fairing is very easy on this bike anyway. 4 screws and 3 allen head bolts. The thing to be careful with is lower front part. There is a v shaped plastic piece that one of the screws goes in to. It also has some pin like retainers.
