It might be overkill for normal people around their home town, but I am incredibly bad with directions, and have a lousy memory to make matters worse, so I use it all the time. I actually do some fairly long multi day rides in unfamiliar areas, and I find it really usefull for exploring. Seeing where a road goes in the context of the surrounding area is very handy. In short, its perfect for me. YMMV.

Gloves are good enough for me for moderately low temps, but I ride down into the teens, and then the heated grips make the difference. I also like the ability to be able to use lighter weight, less bulky, gloves for more of the year. Again, whatever works for ya!
